This year marks the 20th anniversary of New Balance’s classic 580 model, a sneaker that debuted to a neutral reception but subsequently reached iconic status via exclusive collaborations in Japan. The silhouette is intricately linked with Japanese streetwear style of the early 2000s era and played a vital role in pushing forward the boundaries of sneaker collaboration culture.
We were lucky enough to work on this celebratory book that documents the 580’s rise and evolution. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mita Sneakers Creative Director, Shigeyuki Kunii, as well as Yoshifumi Egawa and Naotake Magara (from the now defunct Japanese streetwear label, realmadHECTIC) in regards to the role they played in bringing the 580 project to life.
Only 580 copies of the book have been made and it is not for sale, however you can get yourself a copy with purchase of the exclusive Mita Sneakers x Naotake Magara x Yoshifumi Egawa x New Balance 580 at the New Balance 580 pop-up gallery store at Scape, Singapore.
